Murphy continues solid Illinois Wesleyan career with team of the week honor

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (BVM) — Illinois Wesleyan defensive end Mike Murphy was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday. Last week, the Titans earned a 12-0 win over Augustana.

In the game, Murphy had four tackles including two sacks that combined for 16 yards of total loss. The senior has been a sack specialist throughout his years at Illinois Wesleyan, and is currently second on the active NCAA Division III career sacks list with 22.5.

Murphy burst on the scene as a freshman with six sacks during the 2018 season. But 2019 may have been his true breakout, as he was named a first-team all-conference defensive player. Named player of the week multiple times throughout the season, Murphy also was the Titans’ team MVP and was voted best lineman.

Murphy accrued a combined 35 tackles in the 2019 season, 19.5 of which went for a loss. The Carl Sandburg High School grad’s collegiate success has come as no surprise, as he was a team captain, two-year letter winner and first-team all-conference player during his prep career.

Now, Murphy will look to keep his strong 2021 spring campaign rolling against North Park University when the Titans return to action Saturday, April 10.
