Potsi set to join Illinois State women’s tennis

NORMAL, Ill. (BVM) — On Wednesday, Illinois State women’s tennis coach Maja Kovacek announced that current Northern Illinois tennis player Maria Potsi will transfer and play for the Redbirds next season.

Once her time concludes with Northern Illinois this spring, Potsi will become a grad transfer. Potsi is actually a native of Greece who has competed for the Huskies over the last four years.

As a freshman, the tennis standout emerged on the scene right away by winning the Black Flight Singles at the Cougar Classic in her first collegiate event. Competing primarily at the No. 2 singles spot, Potsi achieved a 14-16 overall record.

After maintaining a similar winning percentage as a sophomore, Potsi would go 12-9 last season as a junior, and 9-5 when playing No. 1 singles. She also impressively won all 28 of the matches she competed in during the dual match season.

In 2021, Potsi has maintained her success by going 13-5 at the team’s No. 1 spot. There is little doubt she will continue to finish her career off strong at Northern Illinois, and will be a welcomed addition for the Redbirds come next spring.

“We’re really excited to add Maria to the squad,” Kovacek said in a statement. “She has a ton of experience and is familiar with the competition in the Midwest and the MVC. She’s having a lot of success this year and we got to see that firsthand when we played NIU earlier this month.”
