South Warren softball off to fast start with back-to-back home wins

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (BVM) — The spring season has returned to the Commonwealth meaning softball and baseball teams are finally taking their first swings since 2019 following the cancellation of the 2020 season due to COVID-19. Though some teams may start slowly after the extended time off, that hasn’t been the case for the South Warren Lady Spartans softball team that has jumped out to a quick 2-0 start during the opening week.

The hot start began with a home matchup against Daviess County in the season opener on March 29. The Lady Spartans were able to squeak out a 6-5 victory in the matchup using a combination of senior Emily Reynolds and junior Selynna Metcalfe on the mound. The two pitchers combined for five earned runs, 10 strikeouts and seven walks on the day with Reynolds finishing her day after four innings before Metcalfe came in and finished the game in three innings to earn the save.

In the batter’s box, the two pitchers were aided by seventh grader McLaine Hudson who knocked in two RBIs on one hit and Carrie Enlow who added two RBIs. Junior Elly Bennett finished off a perfect 1-for-1 day with three walks and the team’s first home run on the season. Sophomore Avery Skaggs led the Lady Spartans with two hits in three at bats with a double and an RBI.

The Lady Spartans were even more dominant during their next game against Apollo High School on March 30. Metcalfe would earn the start throwing three innings striking out four while surrendering only two hits and a walk with no runners scoring. Offensively, the Lady Spartans were unstoppable as the team put up an impressive 18 runs in the 18-4 five inning victory. The offense was led by junior Caroline Pitcock who drove in three runs while also scoring three runs on two hits with three at-bats. Hudson was once again hot with two hits in three plate appearances while adding a steal and crossing home twice. Reynolds also added to her quick start to the season, this time from in the batter’s box, scoring three runs while driving in an RBI on two hits in three plate appearances.

The Lady Raiders will look to continue their fast start to the season when they hit the road for the first time against Logan County on April 2.
