University High looks towards battle with Rochester after picking up first win

NORMAL, Ill. (BVM) — Like many other states, the high school football season in Illinois the past year has been anything but normal. Although the typical fall season was moved to this spring, football is finally back, and many teams are off and running.

One of those squads is University High, who picked up its first win last week, and looked dominant while doing so.

In the opening week of the season, the Pioneers suffered an ugly 45-14 defeat. But they bounced back in a big way when taking on Southeastern, winning 49-6 in a running-clock finish.

Although the Southeastern Spartans had the lead early thanks to a pick-six thrown by University High quarterback Cam Barclay, it was all Pioneers the rest of the way.

University High was led by Peter Deffenbaugh, who ran for three touchdowns, including an 80-yard score late in the game. Deffenbaugh also had an interception for the Pioneers’ defense which forced multiple turnovers throughout the game, and held the Spartans to just 170 total yards.

Meanwhile, the Pioneer offense continued to roll, racking up over 460 total yards.

It was an impressive early-season win for University High, but now the team will face one of the top squads in the area in Rochester High School. Last year when these teams met in their annual Central State Eight conference battle, Rochester dominated in a 48-17 victory.

Now, with their confidence riding high, the Pioneers will look to settle the score in what should be a classic Friday night battle.
