LSU-Shreveport 4, Belhaven 1: Lady Blazers fall to the Lady Pilots in reserve match

JACKSON, Miss (BVM) – In a shortened COVID-19 season, having a reserve match is extremely beneficial to the development of a soccer program.

It shows the athletes that no matter the circumstances, the soccer programs will support the growth of the entire squad.

Starting the match off, the Lady Blazers surged the ball downfield for a quick shot on the goal. However, the failed goal attempt led to a long possession by the Lady Pilots.

Both teams had to maneuver through communication issues, but the Lady Pilots got it right first. A fifteen-yard shot from the Lady Pilots sparked a scoring streak, and the Lady Blazer’s defense tried to pick up.

Deep in Blazer territory, the Lady Pilots had back-to-back corner kicks denied by the Blazer defense. During the lengthy possession, the Lady Pilots shot on the goal four times.

With less than 15 minutes remaining in the first half, things got chippy between the Lady Blazers and Lady Pilots. The referees broke up the scrappiness, and it was followed by a brief discussion between the referees.

A breakdown in the Lady Blazer defense led to the second score by the Lady Pilot offense. Using the momentum that came from the second score, the Lady Pilots were able to add another score, putting them up 3-0.

With less than two minutes left in the first half, the Lady Blazers got on the board. Rounding out the first half, the Lady Pilots went into halftime up 3-1.

The second half did not bring much goal scoring from either side. The ball went back and forth from each side until the Lady Pilots scored their last score of the match.

The match ended with a score of 4-1 with programs that got better all around.

“I really loved the opportunity to play,” sophomore goalkeeper Lilli Denson stated. “I felt like as a whole we played very well against a good opponent.”

Now on a six-game win streak, the Lady Pilots are rolling hot going deep into their conference competition. With three games remaining in the season, the Lady Pilots will face steep competition in two of those games.

For the Lady Blazers, their season is off to a bright start. They have an overall record of 4-2-1. That record ranks them as third in the American Southwest Conference. They also have three games remaining in the season, with hopes to win big.
