Roy caps undefeated season with state championship

JACKSON, Mich. (BVM) — The MHSAA state wrestling championships were held last weekend, and there was plenty of good action throughout the tournament.

Perhaps one of the best performances came from Jackson High School’s Jayson Roy. The senior wrestles in the heavyweight division at the 285-pound weight class, and has been doing so for the last few years.

As a sophomore, Roy did not place at state despite a fourth-place finish at regionals. But his breakout came during his junior season, as Roy would take first at MHSAA districts and regionals. However, the Jackson wrestler would fall just short at state, finishing third overall in his weight class.

Although his senior season may have been more unique than years past, Roy had his best effort yet. The impressive wrestler would conclude the season at an undefeated 31-0. At state, he earned three pins in preliminary matches, and would defeat Holt High School wrestler Joshua Terrill in a 4-0 decision in the MHSAA Division I finals.

The individual win was Jackson High School’s first since 1975. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that Roy did not allow a single point to his opposition the entire season.

Ranked No. 1 in his weight class throughout the majority of the year, Roy delivered in a campaign that will long be remembered at Jackson.
