Catholic’s Griffin is Mississippi State bound

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BVM) — Well ahead of the 2022 Alabama high school football season, Montgomery Catholic defensive back Kylon Griffin has gotten his college decision out of the way. He’ll be able to focus on winning a state championship for the Knights, knowing that he’s going to be a Mississippi State Bulldog.

The three-star recruit did have other offers on the table, choosing the Bulldogs over other intriguing programs like Florida State University and the up-and-coming Indiana Hoosiers. Griffin’s commitment makes him the first DB commit of the 2022 class for head coach Mike Leach and the Bulldogs.

Last season, the 6-foot-1, 180 pound DB specialized as Catholic’s cover corner, registering 55 tackles, 10 pass breakups and two interceptions. He also provided some spark by way of special teams, finding the endzone four times. The Knights were able to advance to the AHSAA 3A title game, but succumbed to the undefeated Fyffe Red Devils who have won three straight state championships and currently hold a 45-game win streak.

Griffin also stars for his track team, with recent marks like a 12.31 100-meter dash and a 25.05 200-meter dash. That combination of speed and size projects him as a college safety.

Now following his senior season this coming year, Griffin will be heading to Starkville to join a team that is currently undergoing some major change. With Coach Leach at the helm, their on-field product is beginning to look a lot different. In their first season together, Leach and the Bulldogs went just 4-7 but beat Tulsa University in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Upon his arrival in 2022, Griffin will offer some reinforcement to a defensive back unit that has been susceptible to big plays over the past couple of years since losing Johnathan Abrams and Cameron Dantzler to the NFL.
