Javion Hamlet ready for NBA

DENTON, Texas (BVM) — Last Monday, North Texas guard Javion Hamlet made it known that he was declaring for the NBA Draft. After a two-year run, the UNT guard will be taking a step towards a successful future.

The Memphis native helped the Mean Green capture back-to-back Conference USA titles. He also helped the program to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2010.

During his junior year, Hamlet averaged 14.6 points and helped UNT capture the regular-season C-USA title. He also was named C-USA Player of the Year. It was North Texas’ first athlete to be named conference’s Male Athlete of the Year as well.

Just a season ago, the Mean Green were hoping to make it to the NCAA Tournament, but COVID-19 had something else to say about that. Hamlet didn’t let that affect him and he came back stronger this year.

This season, he averaged 15.7 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.8 rebounds. He helped lead UNT to a C-USA Tournament title and dished out 28 assists, which is a record.

In the title game against Western Kentucky, Hamlet hit a jumper with 13 seconds left that gave UNT the victory. After that, he went on to average 24.5 points, nine rebounds, and 4.5 assists in the NCAA tournament. In the Big Dance, they surprised a lot of people with a win over Purdue in the first round.

Now, Hamlet will be looking to attract the eyes of NBA teams after having a five-year career at the collegiate level. He could have returned to UNT this year, but decided to move onto the professional level.

Hamlet will most likely be an underdog facing obstacles. But he has overcome obstacles before, like a knee injury that forced him to miss an entire season.

His toughness on and off the court has made Hamlet one of the best basketball players ever to walk through the doors at UNT. Now, he’ll look to make his mark against some of the basketball players in the world.
