Weaver is enjoying her senior year and winning while she does

STILLWATER, Minn. (BVM) — With the Minnesota high school track season beginning after almost a two-year hiatus, Stillwater Area High School senior Analee Weaver is enjoying herself.

“It’s really good to see everyone back,” Weaver said following her first time at practice on April 6.

Weaver enters the season as one of the best long distance runners in the state and a favorite to win state in her two events the 1,600 meter and 3,200 meter. As a sophomore, her last time officially competing for the Ponies, Weaver finished second in the 3200m and fourth in the 1600m at the Class AA state meet.

“I’m going to focus on the 32 (3200 m) and 16 (1600 m) and just trying to do my best but also trying to get the most out of my last season of high school,” Weaver said.

It’s a mindset that has come from a year that has shown everyone that you cannot take anything for granted. Weaver is taking it all in and in enjoying every minute of it.

“I think I’m just going into it with a grateful mindset,” Weaver said. “Have gratitude for everything we are able to do and being grateful that we can run, compete and train with our teammates is such a privilege.”

Weaver had a similar mindset when she entered her cross country season last fall and if that is any implication as to how her track season will go it’s going to a successful one.

Entering as the reigning state champion and the 2019-20 Gatorade Minnesota Girls Cross Country Player of the Year, Weaver continued that success. Due to COVID, there would not be a state meet or many of the big national meets she competed in last year such as the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships and the Nike Cross Nationals Final where she placed 14th and 29th, respectively.

That didn’t phase the All-American who broke the Minnesota 5K state record last October with a time of 16:42.6 at the Forest Lakes Suburban East Conference Tri-Meet as well as finishing fourth at the XC Town USA Meet of Champions. She was also one again named the Gatorade Minnesota Girls Cross Country Player of the Year.

Weaver has come a long way since first trying cross country as a freshman. Prior to that she was primarily a soccer player.

“I wanted a change so I tried cross country and it just went from there,” Weaver said.

Within two years, Weaver was not only one of the best long distance runners in the state, she was also gaining the attention of colleges. Her quick rise to the top is something she credits to her competitiveness.

“I think my competitive drive if I wasn’t at the top I would do everything I could to be up there,” Weaver said.

It’s the reason BYU, one of the best cross country and track programs in the country, recruited her. Now the Cougar commit is enjoying her last season of track before she heads to Provo and, unlike her cross country season, this one will more than likely end with a state championship.
