Nevada’s Gomez earns first Mountain West Player of the Week honors

RENO, Nev. (BVM) – After recording five RBIs and a team-high six runs over a weekend set with conference-leading San Diego State, Nevada outfielder Dario Gomez has been named Mountain West Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

The Wolf Pack took two out of three from SDSU and Gomez is a big reason why, batting .571 with eight hits, including two doubles and a triple, over the weekend. The redshirt sophomore also posted a perfect fielding percentage with five putouts.

Gomez was integral to Nevada’s comeback during game two of Saturday’s doubleheader in which the Wolf Pack overcame a 6-2 deficit to win 10-6. In the midst of a five-run seventh inning, Gomez doubled, stole third and scored a run, then singled home two runs before scoring himself during a three-run eighth inning.

In Sunday’s series-clinching win, Gomez threw out an SDSU runner attempting to score in the second inning to preserve the lead and went 3-for-4 at the plate in a 5-3 victory.

Gomez is putting together an impressive 2021 campaign, leading Nevada and the Mountain West Conference in most offensive categories. He ranks fourth in the league in batting average (.406), second in slugging percentage (.646), eighth in runs scored (21), fourth in hits (39), fifth in RBIs (23), eighth in doubles (7), fifth in triples (2), sixth in home runs (4) and third in stolen bases (8).

The Wolf Pack are back in action on Tuesday and Wednesday for a pair of non-conference games at No. 3 Texas, with both games scheduled for 4:30 p.m. PT.
