Toledo sweeps doubleheader against Ohio including a dominating performance in game two

TOLEDO, Ohio (BVM) — The Toledo Rockets’ softball team faced the Ohio Bobcats in a doubleheader at Scott Park this past Saturday.

In the first game, the score was tied up at one going into the fifth inning. That’s when junior outfielder Anna Dixon hit the ball down the left side which resulted in a two-run triple. Sophomore outfielder Leah Munson’s sacrifice fly extended the Rockets’ lead to 4-1.

The Bobcats would quickly rally back in the seventh inning to tie up the score at four due to a few Rocket errors.

The game was tight going into extra innings where Toledo loaded the bases with two outs during the bottom of the eighth inning, but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.

Fortunately for them, Ohio couldn’t score during the top of the ninth inning, and Toledo would win the game with a walk-off homerun from Munson.

Senior pitcher Erin Hunt earned the win with six strikeouts, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned).

In game two, the Rockets put on a dominating performance against the Bobcats.

Despite Ohio scoring one run in the first inning, Toledo was able to overtake the lead with two runs in the second inning.

The Rockets never looked back at that point by pouring in seven runs (six in the fourth inning) the rest of the way while the Bobcats never scored after the first.

The sixth inning barrage was highlighted by senior Raelyn Nyren’s homer to left field which drove in three runs.

Junior pitcher Makenna Durieux earned her first win as a Rocket in game two with three strikeouts, only allowing two hits.

Senior Dayna Denner finished her day going a perfect five-for-five at the plate through both games including a homerun in game two.

With both wins, the Rockets improve to 19-11 while the Bobcats fall to 12-13.

Toledo will be on the road next weekend to face Western Michigan in a four-game series.
