Manchester football season ends with no contest following COVID within program

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (BVM) — The spring football season came to an end in the worst possible way for the Manchester football program this week. On Monday, the team announced via Twitter that its season would come to an end due to a positive COVID-19 test within the program. The Lancers were scheduled to play in the Region 5B title game against 7-0 Highland Springs, but that game has now been taken off the schedule and declared a no contest, allowing Springers to advance in the Virginia High School League Playoffs.

“No words can describe how proud our coaching staff is of our players and the resiliency they showed this year,” the statement read. “Overcoming the odds to even have a season, suffering a first game loss, players quitting, multiple injuries and covid but you still pressed on focusing on each other and bettering yourself daily. The commitment you showed these last few weeks has been remarkable to watch. As I’ve told you this season, control what you can control, play every play as if it were your last. Unfortunately, that lesson has come to fruition.”

Following a season-opening loss to nearby Monacan High School 27-6, the Lancers reeled off six straight victories to make it to the precipice of the title game. With a lopsided 49-28 victory over Hermitage on April 9, it appeared the area was in for a great game between two high-powered opponents, but sadly that will not take place.

The statement from the Manchester staff continued with messages to both the Lancers seniors as well as the remaining underclassmen.

“To our seniors, we thank you for everything. Amazing what you have accomplished over your four years,” the statement read. “To our underclassmen, let this setback be your motivation in these next few months.”

Finally, the message concluded with words of encouragement to the fans and supporters of the team who watched as the program’s hopes were dashed early.

“To all of Lancer Nation, we will rise from this stronger men, better teammates and ready to meet all challenges.”

With the game off, the Springers will face either Deep Creek or Maury on April 24 in the VHSL state semifinals.
