Clover Hill two-way lineman Blanton commits to ODU football

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (BVM) — Clover Hill High School senior football player Andrew Blanton is quite the athlete. Sure, that can be seen during his play on the football field where the 6-foot-2, 270 pound Blanton plays both left tackle and defensive end for the Cavaliers, but it also showed up in the wrestling room where the senior became the first wrestler in school history to win a state championship when the Class 5 title earlier this year.

Unsurprisingly, that kind of athleticism makes collegiate coaches excited and Blanton was well sought after by many programs. However, only one could win the senior’s services and he chose that team Wednesday.

Blanton announced that he would continue his football career at in-state Old Dominion University. The decision makes Blanton the second Clover Hill football player to commit to a Division I program this spring joining teammate Kendall Cross who committed to University of Virginia in March.

Though it is not yet clear which side of the ball Blanton will play for the Monarchs, it is likely that he would be used primarily on the defensive side where he finished as a third team all-region player last season. Regardless of where he plays for the Monarchs in the future, the team will still be able to use both Blanton’s frame and athleticism to help them control the line of scrimmage.

For Blanton, he can now add collegiate football player to his list of accomplishments, right next to his state wrestling title.
