Martinsville softball continues to honor late former coach Ken Rhoden

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (BVM) — In the late 1990s, Ken Rhoden was hired by former Martinsville High School athletic director Don Lipps to become the Artesians’ new softball coach. In the 20 years to follow, Rhoden became an absolute legend.

Retiring in 2018, Rhoden left the program as the all-time winningest coach, and led the Artesians to back-to-back IHSAA Class 4A state championships in 2005 and 2006.

Softball wasn’t Rhoden’s only impact in the community, as he was involved with a local youth basketball program in Martinsville for 47 years. Rhoden also coached junior football, and coached and umpired local baseball games.

A Martinsville High School graduate, former insurance agent and inspiration to countless young athletes, Rhoden unfortunately passed away last summer due to a heart attack.

Although he may be gone, Rhoden’s impact and legacy have not been forgotten, and Martinsville continues to remember one of their local legends. Last fall, the Artesians decided to rename their softball diamond Rhoden Field in memory of the late coach.

Just over a week ago, Martinsville continued to honor Rhoden by having his wife, Theresa, throw out the first pitch at the team’s first home softball game of the season. Despite a loss to Mooresville, it was a special game and moment for all involved.

The Artesians currently sit at 6-6 on the season, winning their latest contest 8-1 over Greenwood. Next up on the schedule is Bloomington North on Friday. No matter where the remainder of the season takes this program, it is one that will not be forgotten as they continue to remember a local legend.
