Galena girls soccer dominates 5A All-Region awards after regional title

RENO, Nev. (BVM) – Less than a week after winning its third consecutive regional championship, the Galena girls soccer team racked up a handful of Class 5A All-Region honors on Wednesday.

Grizzlies’ head coach Annie DiLoreto earned Coach of the Year recognition while San Jose State commit Isabella Flocchini took home Offensive Player of the Year. Zoe Atherton was named Midfield Player of the Year and Carly Moss was dubbed Defensive Player of the Year.

The all-region recognition continued as Katie Muff, Erin Cryer and Lauren LaFountain were named to the Northern 5A All-Region first team. Three other Grizzlies (Daria Ferrai, Evelyn Fraser and Carly Simmons) earned second team honors while Nicole Sullivan was an honorable mention.

Galena ended its shortened season with a perfect 11-0 record and a third consecutive Class 5A regional title on Saturday, beating Douglas for the third year in a row. Flocchini scored four goals in the 5-0 win and broke the Nevada all-time scoring record for goals in a career (118) in the process.

The San Jose State pledge tallied her first goal of the game in the 16th minute and buried another in the 31st minute for her 116th career goal and a new all-time record. A fitting end to the season for a dominant player and team.
