Charlie Brewer shines in Utah debut during Utes’ spring game

SALT LAKE CITY (BVM) – Utah football got its first live-action look at transfer quarterback Charlie Brewer on Saturday. Approximately 6,500 fans were in Rice-Eccles Stadium for the Utes’ annual spring game and Brewer’s long-awaited debut after four impressive seasons at Baylor.

The former Baylor star, who started 39 games for the Bears from 2017-20, didn’t disappoint as he went a perfect 15-for-15 for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone.

Brewer ranks in the top five at Baylor in career completions (828, first), completion percentage (.635, second), passing yards (9,700, second), touchdown passes (65, second) and passing efficiency (138.1, fifth).

After a scoreless first quarter, Brewer ignited the offense with a 27-yard passing play to Solomon Ennis to open the second frame. A nine-yard touchdown pass from Brewer to Ennis, who finished with four catches for 44 yards, later in the drive gave the red team a 7-0 lead.

Brewer remained in control on the next drive, hitting Devaughn Vele on a game-long 40-yard pass up the sideline to set up a Brewer-to-Vele touchdown connection later in the drive. Vele’s touchdown was a five-yard, juggling catch and one of his four catches for 66 yards on the day.

Running back Faysal Aden found the endzone later in the fourth quarter to clinch a 21-0 win for the red team. The scrimmage was a culmination of the team’s 15 spring practices, and now attention turns to the 2021 fall season.

Utah and its fans will be back in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 2 for the season opener against Weber State.
