DJ Jeffries comes home to play for Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. (BVM) — Just a handful of days after 2020-21 Preseason ACC Player of the Year Garrison Brooks announced he’d be transferring to Mississippi State, Memphis guard D.J. Jeffries announced Monday that he’d also be joining the Bulldogs.

During this past season with the Memphis Tigers, Jeffries played in 28 games (started 11) and averaged 25.6 minutes. In those games, he averaged 9.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists. Jeffries shot 44.3% from the field, 35% from 3-point range and he made 56.2% of his free throws.

He started 13 games his freshman year, but he would miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

The 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward is from Mississippi. Throughout his prep career, he played basketball at Olive Branch High School. And when Jeffries opened up his recruitment, Mississippi State was one of his top choices. But he ultimately decided to commit to Memphis.

Jeffries’ last game as a Tiger, ironically, was played against Mississippi State in the NIT Championship game. He recorded 15 points, five rebounds, five blocks, and two assists. With his performance in the NIT Championship game and throughout the season, Jefferies received interest from top-tier programs such as Alabama, Ole Miss, and LSU.

Now, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, last year didn’t count against his college eligibility. He’ll still be considered a sophomore for the 2021-22 season.

Jeffries and a handful of other high-level recruits and transfers will be trying to help the Bulldogs compete at a high level in the SEC this year. It should be an interesting team to watch out for this upcoming season.
