Soderberg becomes next head coach of Millikin men’s basketball program

DECATUR, Ill. (BVM) — Kramer Soderberg has officially been named the new head coach of the Millikin University men’s basketball program. Serving as the team’s top assistant since 2015, Soderberg will now get his chance as the team’s leader.

“Kramer Soderberg is first and foremost a quality person who will create a culture that molds young men,” Millikin Director of Athletics Dr. Craig White said in a statement. “He knows the game and can communicate that knowledge to our players. He comes from a basketball family and has basketball in his blood and is committed to providing our student-athletes with a positive experience on and off the court.”

Soderberg indeed comes from a strong basketball background, as his father is long-time college coach and current University of Virginia assistant, Brad Soderberg. After initially playing at the University of Miami-Ohio, Kramer played his final two years of college ball under his father at Lindenwood University.

In his two years at Lindenwood, Kramer started all 66 games he played in, scoring over 1,000 points while averaging 17 points per game. A third-team NAIA All-American, Kramer was inducted into the Lindenwood Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.

Kramer’s elite on-court talent goes all the way back to his prep days playing at St. Charles High School in Missouri. He was an all-conference performer each year there, and a three-time all-state player. He was also named Gatorade Player of the Year in Missouri during the 2007-08 season.

After graduating from Lindenwood in 2012, it didn’t take long for Kramer to follow in his father’s footsteps as a coach, as he quickly latched on as a graduate assistant at his alma mater. After three years there, he came to Millikin as an assistant coach. Now, he will take over for Mark Scherer, who left the program earlier this year.

“I am humbled and honored to become the next head coach at Millikin University,” Kramer said in a statement. “For the last six years Millikin University and Decatur has become our family’s home — we are so grateful to continue to be a part of such wonderful communities. Becoming a head coach has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I cannot think of a better place to begin my career than as the leader of the Millikin University basketball program.”

Kramer will have work to do, as he takes over a Big Blue squad that went just 1-12 in a shortened season this past winter. But with plenty of basketball experience and a rich family history to fall back on, Kramer is poised to lead Millikin to brighter days ahead.
