St. Teresa football keeps dominant season going

DECATUR, Ill. (BVM) — For a while, it felt like the high school football season in Illinois may never come. But by the end of January, the IHSA announced there would be a limited spring football season, giving schools like St. Teresa the opportunity to get on the field.

The Bulldogs got back to practice in early March, and have not looked back. In 2019, St. Teresa went an impressive 11-2, and is replicating that success so far this season.

The campaign was much anticipated throughout the winter, as some new faces as well as returning players were poised to be in the fold. One of those new faces was defensive coordinator Brit Miller, who is a former Illinois Fighting Illini star and NFL player.

The former Eisenhower High School standout joined head coach Mark Ramsey on the coaching staff as well as former MacArthur High School star and fellow Division I and NFL talent, Moe Dampeer.

Together, Miller and Dampeer have formed one of the area’s top defensive units. In the first two weeks of the season, the Bulldogs posted two shutouts against Clinton and Sullivan/Okaw Valley. After earning another shutout last week, St. Teresa has given up just four scoring plays — two touchdowns and two field goals — through five weeks of the season.

The team’s offense has been nearly as good, putting up totals of 56, 68 and 69 this season, scoring 40 points or more in each contest. With the Bulldogs continuing to roll, they were recently ranked as the No. 1 team in Class 2A of the Illinois Football Coaches Poll.

St. Teresa will look to keep its perfect season alive as they take on Meridian in a home game on Friday night.
