Lecanto tennis to be well-represented at state
LECANTO, Fla. (BVM) — The Lecanto girls tennis team will be represented at the FHSAA Finals not once, but twice this year. Not to be outdone by the No. 1 doubles team that made it roughly two weeks ago, the No. 2 doubles team made up by Jahnavi Kompella and Kashin Mathur clinched its bid by securing a regional title on April 22.
The duo was down by one set, rallied to even things up at 1-1, and then rallied yet again in the match set from a three point deficit to win it. Their victory secured the 3A-5 championship over Seminole by a final score of 4-3.
The duo of Kompella and Mathur was coming into the match with a little bit of rust. In the school’s previous meeting versus Osceola, doubles were not even needed as the Panthers dominated 5-0. Being put into this high-stakes winner-take-all regional battle was quite the flip-flop.
The girls also took care of business in their singles matches during this meet. Kompella and Mathur won handedly, with Kompella winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 and Mathur doing the same, 6-1, 6-1.
The next stop for this pairing will be at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs on April 26 where the Class 3A state tournament will be hosted.
