UMaine’s Millan signs contract with Washington Mystics

ORONO, Maine (BVM) — It didn’t take long for University of Maine guard Blanca Millan to sign on with a WNBA team after another stellar season. The Black Bears’ fifth all-time leading scorer will get her opportunity at the next level after singing a training camp contract with the Washington Mystics.

Millan ranked first in the America East in scoring (21.4), third in rebounding (7.4), and third in field goal percentage (47.9) in her final season. Her 2.9 steals per game also ranked her 15th in the nation on the way to a 17-3 season in 2020-21. The career year for the fifth-year senior comes after Millan tore her ACL in the year prior.

“We could not be more proud and excited for Blanca,” UMaine head coach Amy Vachon said. “She has worked so hard for this opportunity. She is one of the best ever to play at UMaine and is the third Black Bear to have the opportunity to compete in the WNBA along with two of the best ever – Cindy Blodgett and Jamie Cassidy.  We are so excited to follow her journey and cheer her on. Blanca has always set her goals high and we are so excited to watch her chase her dreams.”

The Santiago de Compostela, Spain native will be joining Cindy Blodgett and Jaime Cassidy as the only Black Bears to compete in the WNBA.

Millan leaves quite the legacy with the Black Bears, becoming the first player in America East women’s basketball history to be named the league’s Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year twice in a career. She finished with eight double-doubles, 96 double-digit scoring performances, 42 showings of 20 or more points in a single game, six 30-plus scoring outings, and 1,974 career points.

Her goal of winning an America East championship this season came up short, even after a stellar season by the Black Bears. The team wound up losing in the championship round of the tournament in a close game against Stony Brook.

The nowformer Maine guard will be looking to make good on her dream of playing in the league with practices starting in the coming week.
