Savannah State’s Johnson hoping to hear his name called
SAVANNAH, Ga. (BVM) — The NFL draft is fast-approaching and 224 college athletes will hear their names get called and see their dreams become reality. The Savannah State Tigers, a Division II program, have one hopeful in their program. Offensive lineman Michael Johnson has an NFL chance despite the team losing its 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 6-foot-5 ¾, 325-pound lineman played in the Tropical Bowl and the Hula Bowl this past January, putting himself on the map. In these exposure games full of FBS Division I all-stars, Johnson stood out and impressed the many scouts in attendance. To further build upon his ascending reputation, Johnson participated in Georgia Southern’s pro day.
“I always knew I was going to be good,” Johnson said in a press release. “I focus. I stick to myself and I do what the coaches tell me. That’s all that matters. And it worked.”
Johnson does have his Master’s Degree after graduating Cum Laude so his future is bright regardless, but if Johnson is drafted, he will join just two other former Tigers as NFL Draft picks. One of them is former Seahawks running back selection Ken Dawson, and the other is Hall of Fame inductee Shannon Sharpe. Two other Savannah State alumni, Tim Walker and Troy Hambrick were NFL players but signed as undrafted free agents.
