Former Viking Elise Goetzinger wins national championship with Kentucky

OMAHA, Neb. (BVM) — The NCAA women’s volleyball national tournament finished over the weekend with Kentucky (24-1) beating Texas (27-2) in the national championship in four sets.

After losing the first set 25-20, the Wildcats won three straight to give them their first national championship in program history. Kentucky entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed after winning the SEC championship for the fourth year in a row, going 19-1 in conference play.

One of the players on the historic Wildcat volleyball team was former Mount Horeb High School Viking Elise Goetzinger. Goetzinger had three blocks in the national championship along with three kills and a dig. Overall, Goetzinger had 70 kills and 57 blocks in 52 sets played for Kentucky.

The freshman entered the season as the No. 27-ranked recruit in the Class of 2020 was one of the reasons Kentucky had the No.1 recruiting class according to PrepVolleyball.

In high school, she was on varsity for three years and  had 1,400 kills. She was awarded first team all-state  honors in 2018 and 2019 as well as first team all-conference honors in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

As a senior, she was named a second-team AVCA Under Armour All-American.

Now Goetzinger and Kentucky will look to win their fifth straight SEC title and defend their national championship with much of the team returning for next season.
