Tech Panthers split versus one of the nation’s best

MELBOURNE, Fla. (BVM) — The Florida Tech softball team had a pivotal doubleheader versus the No. 8-ranked Rollins College Tars this past week, and it salvaged a 1-1 split after getting downed 9-0 in the opening game.

Game one started with the Tars nickel-and-diming the Panthers until they busted it open in the fifth inning where, ironically, they scored five runs. Florida Tech had no answer, mustering just one hit the entire ball game. That moved Rollins ace Ali Shenefield to 7-0 on the season.

In game two needing a strong bounce-back, the Panthers brought some pitching of their own. Giving the Tars a taste of their own medicine, Tina Velasquez Rolon held Rollins to just two hits, notching a complete game. She also helped her own cause along the way, hitting a solo shot that turned out to be the only run of the contest.

Now at 12-12 on the year, the Panthers will head to Palm Beach Atlantic on May 1 for what will be their final road game of the season. They’ll then round out the schedule by playing host to PBA in a doubleheader the following day.
