Annalise Yang wins state championship as a freshman

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. (BVM) — It was an all-Madison battle of freshmen in the WIAA alternate fall season singles state championship April 23 in Lake Geneva as Madison La Follette’s Annalise Yang faced off against Madison Memorial’s Lily Olson.

Yang, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, beat No. 1-seeded Ava Dunsirn from Neenah in the semifinals to get to the finals to take on No. 2-seeded Lily Olson.

The week before, Olson had beat Yang in the sectional title game, giving Yang her only loss of the season. In the championship, Yang returned the favor, beating the Spartan 6-3, 6-0 and giving Olson her first loss.

Yang is now the first Lancer to win a state championship in girls tennis and will look to continue that streak this upcoming fall.
