Middleton girls tennis wins state championship

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (BVM) — The Middleton High School girls tennis team left Eau Claire this past weekend with their second state championship in program history.

The Cardinals entered the state tournament as the No. 2 seed with a match against No. 3-seeded Ashwaubenon in the semifinals. Middleton beat Ashwaubenon 6-1 to advance to the finals where it would face No. 1-seeded and undefeated Neenah.

It was a close finals match with both teams taking wins. The Cardinals won singles matches No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4, leading to a 3-3 tie as both teams entered the No. 3 doubles match. The Sax sisters, Caroline and Charlotte, beat Bradyn Gentile and Alise Van Dyke to give Middleton a 4-3 win.

The state championship is the second for the Cardinals and their first since 2013.
