Two Virginia Beach ESPN top 300 football players take talents to North Carolina
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (BVM) — The North Carolina Tar Heels football team received a pair of Christmas gifts from the Virginia Beach area this past December. Princess Anne High School wide receiver Tychaun Chapman committed to the Tar Heels on Dec. 19 followed closely by Green Run High School cornerback Tayon Halloway who made his decision to join UNC with a Christmas Day announcement.

The duo share more than just a city as the two are also ranked in ESPN’s top 300 recruit list for the Class of 2022 with Chapman listed at No. 59 overall and Halloway at No. 228. The two join fellow top 300 recruit Malaki Hamrick, a North Carolina outside linebacker ranked No. 231 overall, and three-star recruit Treyvon Green from Life Christian Academy in Colonial Beach, Va. to round out the Tar Heels’ recruiting class as it currently sits.
In Chapman, UNC is getting one of the most dynamic receivers in the entire country. At 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Chapman is electric with the ball in his hands and has proven such time and again during his time with the Cavaliers even during a shortened spring season this year where he had 800 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns in just five games earning him first team All-Beach District honors.

With his decision, Chapman will join former Cavalier cornerback Tony Grimes who reclassified from the Class of 2021 to the Class of 2020 to enroll early to UNC due to uncertainty with the pandemic and found himself on the field thanks to his skills as a five-star recruit.
The Tar Heels again looked for lightning to strike twice by trying to land another highly-touted Virginia Beach cornerback, this time in Halloway from Green Run. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound Halloway proved his athletic ability is on another level this spring season as the star cornerback would actually excel on both sides of the ball, so much so he would beat out Chapman for All-Beach District Offensive Player of the Year honors as a wide receiver as well as earn first team honors as a defensive back.

With their Virginia Beach connection, both Chapman and Halloway are likely excited to help Grimes represent their city well at Chapel Hill. For the Tar Heels, they hope the talent from the 757 will bring them to heights they haven’t seen since the 1980’s, an Atlantic Coast Conference championship. As top 300 talents nationally, Chapman and Halloway will certainly bring some excitement with them to UNC in 2022.
