Former Covington Catholic basketball star Fredrick transfers to Kentucky from Iowa

PARK HILLS, Ky. (BVM) — Welcome back home, C.J. Fredrick. Three years after starring as the 2018 Kentucky Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year from Covington Catholic High School, Fredrick will return to the Commonwealth as a member of the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team following his transfer from the University of Iowa, the team announced Wednesday.

Fredrick, a redshirt sophomore, has been largely considered one of the best 3-point shooters in the entire country. Over his three seasons with the Hawkeyes, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 8.8 points in 52 games while hitting 83 3-pointers on 178 attempts, good for a 46.6% mark in his career.

“I am very excited for this new opportunity in my basketball career,” Fredrick said in a school press release. “I really appreciate the confidence Coach Cal has in me. I am looking forward to going to work and developing as a player with Coach Cal, the staff and my future teammates. Thank you to Coach (Fran) McCaffery, the staff, my teammates and Iowa fans for three memorable years. I cannot wait to get back on the floor at Rupp Arena to help this team win and make Big Blue Nation proud.”

Under the new NCAA transfer rules, Fredrick will be immediately eligible to play for the Wildcats during the 2021-22 season. Fredrick is the third transfer to join Kentucky this year joining former West Virginia Mountaineer forward Oscar Tshiebwe and Davidson Wildcats guard Kellan Grady.

Wildcats head coach John Calipari is excited with the addition of the sharpshooting Fredrick.

“CJ Fredrick is an established college player from a terrific program who has competed at the highest level and has made big shots and big plays,” Calipari said in the press release. “As we all know, CJ is a terrific shooter, but what stuck out to make on tape is he takes care of the ball – he has an excellent assist-to-turnover ratio – and he can hold his own defensively. He guarded the best guard on the other team in just about everything I have seen.”

During his time at Covington Catholic, Fredrick was nothing short of spectacular. As a senior, Fredrick led the Colonels to a 35-4 record and to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association state title. Fredrick was a star throughout the year for the Colonels as he averaged 23.1 points and shot 48.4% from 3-point range as a senior, but he brought his game up a notch in the state tournament as he averaged 27.8 points with two 32-point games while shooting 63.6% from the floor during the Sweet Sixteen. For his efforts, Fredrick earned tournament MVP honors.

With Fredrick’s sharpshooting ability, the Wildcats should feel pretty good about their upcoming season following their disastrous 2020-21 campaign. Based on everything, it seems that Fredrick is excited for the homecoming.
