Hermitage’s James wins Fischer Player of the Year award after stellar senior football season

HENRICO, Va. (BVM) — Hermitage High School senior running back Nigel James was named the recipient of the Mark L. Fischer Player of the Year award, given to the top high school football player in the Richmond area. James earned the honor after his stellar senior performance in which he gained 1,474 rushing yards and scored 19 touchdowns, leading the Panthers to a 6-1 record as the team fell to Manchester in the first round of the postseason.

James becomes just the second winner of the honor, joining Hopewell running back TreVeyon Henderson who won the honor in its inaugural season in December 2019. Monacan’s Tyler Hensley, Deep Run’s Bo Kite and Benedictine’s Jay Woolfolk were the other finalists for the award and each received multiple first-place votes, proving how competitive the area was all season.

The senior was presented the award during a virtual presentation at the school on Wednesday night. James was joined by his family, coaches and teammates in celebration of the honor.

Though not committed to any program yet, James has a few options for the next level including at Division II West Virginia State and Division III Juniata College and Hampden-Sydney College, among others.

Wherever he heads next, James will be bringing some special hardware with him.
