Iona softball heads into MAAC Championship after standout season
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (BVM) — After only having the chance to play eight games last year, the Iona Gaels softball team is making sure it doesn’t miss out on any of the excitement in 2021.
With one of the top seeds locked up for the MAAC Championship, the Gaels made sure to keep their foot on the gas as they headed into their final series against Manhattan College. With a double-header sweep of the Jaspers, led by fifth-year senior Ciarra DiGuilio who racked up five hits in the two games and senior Natalia Meray who added four, the Gaels are officially locked into the No. 3 slot in the MAAC Championship.

The weekend wins over the Jaspers also gave Iona bragging rights on the year as they came away winning three of four games against the Manhattan squad. With a hot bat from junior Jessica Chilcott, who’s hit for a .385 average on the season and 10 home runs, and junior pitcher Kara Zazzaro who’s gone 18-2 with a 2.24 ERA, the Gaels have righted their ship after three straight down seasons with a record of 21-10.
Iona will look to keep its momentum going against that same Jaspers team, with a three–game matchup scheduled for Saturday.
