Charlotte Catholic football is state champions

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Catholic football team has been on fire in recent years and continued its winning streak as state champions by defeating Havelock 14-7 for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A state championship on May 7. This isn’t the first time Cougars proved their mettle in the field, as this is the fourth title Cougars will bring home. Even though their talented coach, Jim Oddo, passed away this year, Charlotte Catholic players were fierce on the field and grabbed their well-deserved victory.

Paul Neel and Adam Franek began the scores in the first quarter, and it was downhill for Havelock from there onwards. Safety Kevin Dumser brought home the victory touchdown in the fourth quarter. The team paid a heartfelt tribute to the late coach at the end and dedicated their championship in his memory.

With their fourth state title, the Cougars are expected to once again compete for a title when football resumes in the fall, despite the loss of their long time leader in Oddo.
