UNM’s Maly, Edwards earn All-Pacific honors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) — Redshirt senior Gwen Maly and junior Jadyn Edwards were rewarded Tuesday after playing huge roles in leading the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team to its most successful season ever as both were named United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I All-Pacific Region players. While Edwards earned second-team honors, Maly became just the second player in program history to be named to the first team.

“I am thrilled for Gwen and Jadyn to be recognized,” UNM head coach Heather Dyche said in a press release. “They are players who consistently put the team first and help those around them to be better on and off the field.”

Maly, who was a third-team All-Pacific selection in 2018, started every match this past season and had a team-best 21 points — tied for 10th in program history for points in a single season — on nine goals and three assists. She also had four match-winning goals for the 10-2-1 Lobos, who captured the Mountain West Conference title to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011 and became the state’s first-ever women’s soccer team to advance in the tourney after beating Navy in the first round.

Edwards finished her season with three goals and three assists, but two of those goals came in the MW title match against San Diego State, including the golden goal in overtime which sent UNM to the national tournament for just the third time in program history. While Edwards will return next season and will undoubtedly be a key senior leader for the Lobos, Maly will turn her full attention to the UNM School of Medicine.
