Agar brothers add to rivalry between Zeeland East and Zeeland West

ZEELAND, Mich. (BVM) — They may be brothers, but Jeff and Josh Agar compete for different schools. Jeff is a senior baseball player for the Zeeland East Chix. Meanwhile, Josh is a sophomore who suits up for the Zeeland West Dux.

With both the Chix and the Dux having strong campaigns on the diamond thus far, last week’s games against each other meant a lot when it came to the Ottawa-Kent (OK) Green Conference standings. It also meant the brothers would get to square off when the stakes were highest.

Years ago, the brothers were officially placed in different schools after district boundaries changed. Growing up as athletes, it was bound that they would face off at some point.

In game one of a doubleheader last week, Josh took the mound for Zeeland West while Jeff batted third for Zeeland East. Josh had a standout performance in the game, striking out his brother twice in addition to 12 other batters.

However, the senior would get the best of his little brother in the fourth inning, breaking up a no-hitter with an RBI double. It was Jeff’s only hit of the game, while Josh would go six-and-a-third innings on the mound.

Zeeland East finally broke through against Josh in the seventh inning, tying the game and eventually taking a 4-2 lead to give them the win. The Chix also won game two of the doubleheader, and would finish off a sweep of the three-game set with a dramatic walk-off victory two days later.

The Chix have continued their dominance since, most recently winning two blowout contests against Muskegon. Currently, Zeeland East sits at an overall record of 19-4, and is in the driver’s seat to take home an OK Green Conference crown with a 13-1 league record.

Although Jeff may have gotten the better of Josh this time around, the future remains bright for both players as well as both teams as each the Chix and Dux look to finish their seasons strong and make a deep postseason run.
