Niwot girls dominate district track meet; boys also run away with 1st

LONGMONT, Colo. (BVM) — With four state titles and two runner-up finishes over the past eight years in Class 4A, Niwot has clearly become the premier high school girls track and field program in its class. And if this past weekend’s performance at the St. Vrain RE-1J District meet was any indication, that isn’t likely to change anytime soon.

Led by star senior Taylor James, a five-time individual state champion, the Cougars ran away to win the girls’ meet with 276 points, well ahead of second-place Erie (171). James rolled to first place in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes with winning times of 25.53 seconds and 56.90 seconds, respectively, while Kimora Northrup aided the Cougars’ cause with victories in the 100 (14.67) and 300 hurdles (44.04). Niwot’s relay teams also raced to gold in each event.

Meanwhile, Niwot’s boys program, which also captured the 2019 state title in 4A, showed that it might be the team to beat again this spring as it also ran away from the competition with 230 points, easily outscoring second-place Erie (150). Junior Nick Stade played a big role in the boys victory as he took first place in the 110 hurdles (16.46), 300 hurdles (41.73) and the long jump (19 feet, 0.75 inches) while also nabbing silver in the triple jump (38-4).
