FCS standout Quinton Cage transferring to LSU

THIBODAUX, La. (BVM) — On May 21, the LSU Tigers added another defensive back to their already stacked roster. As a preferred walk-on, Quinton Cage, a former Archbishop Rummel star defensive back, announced via Twitter he would suit up in the purple and gold this fall.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound defensive back made his collegiate debut when the Nicholls State Colonels played Lincoln College on Feb. 19. During the contest, he recorded four tackles.

Cage would ultimately record 30 total tackles, 11 for loss, in seven games during the Colonels’ 2021 spring season. Unfortunately, the 2020 fall season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cage also intercepted one pass and forced one fumble during the spring.

Adding to his spectacular play on the field, Cage was one of the finalists to be named for the Jerry Rice Award, which goes to the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Before joining the Colonels, Cage was part of a Rummel team that went 13-0 and won the Division I state title. During that 2019 season, he had 124 total tackles, 19 for loss, six sacks, and four forced fumbles.

According to 247Sports, Cage was a three-star prospect in the Class of 2020. But in the long run, Cage decided to give the FCS route a try, and now he’s off to one of the top programs college football has to offer.

“The first day I hit the portal, schools were texting and calling telling me they wanted me,” Cage said in an interview with Louisiana vs. All Y’all. “When the opportunity presented itself [for me] to go to LSU, it felt way different. I walked out of my house with a yellow shirt … I flipped it inside out, and it was an LSU shirt. I told my parents, ‘It’s got to be God.’”

Cage has four years of eligibility thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. So don’t be surprised if Cage earns a scholarship in Baton Rouge.
