Ooltewah junior Doty breaks school triple jump record on way to fourth-place state decathlon finish

OOLTEWAH, Tenn. (BVM) — It seemed throughout the outdoor track season that as the competition level raised, so did Ooltewah High School junior athlete Christian Doty’s performance. As he took the track during the contests, especially later in the season, it seemed as though Doty was using an unseen extra gear that would make him even faster and jump even further as the competitions wore on. This ability to perform against the sport’s stiffest competition paid dividends for the junior as he would place fourth in the decathlon at the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association State Large Class competition on May 21 at Austin Peay State University.

Doty would find himself near the top of the leaderboard in each of the 10 events during the contest. When the competition was complete, Doty would finish No. 2 in the 100-meter dash, No. 3 in the high jump, No. 4 in the triple jump, No. 4 in the 400-meter, No. 4 in the long jump, No. 5 in the shot put, No. 6 in the pole vault, No. 6 in the 110-meter hurdles, No. 7 in the 1,500-meter and No. 10 in the discus throw. His finish earned the Owls five points towards their state championship which will begin on May 27.

The decathlon performance came on the heels of what has so far been the best jumping performance of Doty’s career. On May 7 at the TSSAA Section 2 sectional at Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Doty would put himself in the history books as he landed a school record triple jump of 44 feet, 7.25 inches. The jump gave Doty a second place finish on the day, qualifying him for the state meet where he will also participate in the 4×400 Relay. Though he was close to qualifying for the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump with two No. 5 finishes, only the top four finishers from sectionals advanced to the state competition.

With his top four finish in the decathlon already completed and his other state events coming in the near future, Doty can make his historic season even more memorable. With his knack of playing up to his competition, don’t be surprised to see Doty close to the top of the TSSAA state leaderboard by season’s end.
