Schuykill Valley track and field takes PIAA team title, first for the girls in school history

LEESPORT, Pa. (BVM) — The Schuykill Valley High School girls track and field team are the 2021 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class 2A team champions.

The girls ran, jumped and threw hard at the state meet before being crowned on May 28 in the Seth Grove Stadium at Shippensburg University.

This is the first time the girls team has ever won a state title in school history and it couldn’t have happened without a couple of standout athletes.

Senior Ashlyn Giles captured the gold in the discus with a throw of 165-feet-4-inches, which is only a few feet off her current PIAA state record. That record should stay for a while considering Burgettstown’s Miranda Schramm threw very far behind at just 141-feet-7-inches as the second place finisher — roughly 25 feet behind Giles.

Giles became a double-gold winner during the evening after throwing 49-feet-2.25-inches in the shot put as well.

There were several other standouts at the meet. The 4×100-meter relay team, consisting of Samantha Lisa, Annie Gao, Abigail Searfoss, Madison Ziska, together ran to a time of 50.54 for the bronze finish.

Ziska also finished at No. 7 in the 400-meter dash, No. 4 in the long-jump and No. 3 in the 200-meter dash — earning four top-place finishes for her and the team during the state meet.
