Post University’s athlete awards and a surprise team award
WATERBURY, Conn. (BVM) — Post University hosts their annual Swoopy Awards to honor the academic and athletic achievements of its teams and student-athletes. But, at the 2021 ceremony, a group of people that are not Post athletes ended up snatching the top team award.
With the unique challenges everyone faced because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Post handed out the Team of the Year award to the vaccination site team. This team, led by multiple campus staff, helped to vaccinate residents around the Waterbury area.
“Without the vaccination team, there would have been no Spring sports season and who knows how long that could have extended to,” Sports Information Director Brendan Faherty shared in a Post University blog. “Everything starts with them. There are not enough accolades and words to describe the amount of gratitude that we have for everything that they did. The Team of the Year award was our way of saying thank you; for the life-changing service they provided the Post University and Waterbury communities throughout the last number of months.”
Individual athletes were also recognized during the virtual ceremony. Both men’s and women’s ice hockey swept the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award: Nick Levesque (men’s) and Kaitlyn Daly (women’s).
The Women’s Lacrosse team, which advanced to the semi-finals of the 2021 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament for the first time in program history, was given the Best Moment award for that historic achievement.
The Comeback Athlete award was given to Brycin Hernandez (baseball), the Male Hard Hat award recipient was Nolan Mazako (track and field) and the Female Hard Hat award honoree was Katelyn Andres (women’s basketball).
