The beachside boys of West Shore lacrosse have their most defining season yet
SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — The West Shore Boys Varsity Lacrosse team had a defining 2021 season. Despite an undulation of unexpected events, the team surged to victory in the school’s first district playoff win in the history of West Shore’s lacrosse program. The pre-season was plagued by unknowns – would there be enough players willing to compete during the pandemic, and would there even be an opportunity to play as a team during the wave of Covid cancellations?
The season started off hopeful when Kevin Herrman, a parent of two West Shore students, stepped up to be the head coach after being an assistant coach for a brief time when the pandemic cut the season short last spring. The team had 19 players on its roster with more than half residing in our beachside communities,18 were returning players and committed to making 2021 a memorable year despite the uncertainties. With the roster ranging from one senior down to one seventh grader and most of the team being sophomores, these boys were tenacious in their execution of the offensive strategies and resilient in their defensive game against opponents that were mostly upperclassmen.
The season was turbulent as the entire team had to quarantine two separate times; both abruptly followed exuberant wins. One followed a regular season game against Satellite Beach, when they came back from a deficit of 6 goals with 1 min 54 secs at the end of the 4th quarter and then scored the winning goal with 9 secs into OT. The second was after their playoff win against Satellite Beach with the score of 16-11.
Beachside teammates include Rylan Runske, Zach Johnson, Ryan Herbruger, Luke Herrman, Rex Herrman, Hayden Millband, Max Aronson, Spencer Lynes, Gavin Litchfield, Ryan Canavan, Chris Saladino, Ethan Bergman, Lance Obst, and Zach Zammas.
