Midland-Dow lacrosse earns first-ever regional title

MIDLAND, Mich. (BVM) — The Midland-Dow boys lacrosse co-op is making history during the 2021 season, and continued doing so recently by winning its first-ever regional championship.

In the Division I championship game against Clarkston at Oxford High School, Midland-Dow got revenge from an earlier-season loss with a 17-9 victory. The win improves Midland-Dow’s record to 14-6 on the year, and sends them to a state quarterfinal matchup.

Midland-Dow had control of the game throughout, taking an early 5-3 lead after the first quarter, and still maintaining a 9-6 advantage at the half. The third period is when the team really turned it on, as seven goals would give Midland-Dow a 16-6 advantage going into the final frame.

The team was led defensively by Jack Erickson, who made 14 saves in the contest. Offensively, Chase Mahabir scored seven goals and dished out two assists, while Will Kuper won 16 faceoffs.

The Midland-Dow lacrosse co-op has been around since 2010. Last year, the program was granted an extension to keep the team around through the 2022 season. The hope is by that time, both Midland High School and Dow High School will be able to support lacrosse programs on their own.

While Dow would be able to, Midland has lacked participation numbers to get to that point. However, a deep postseason run such as this season’s can only help in the attempt to increase numbers.

With just eight teams remaining in the MHSAA boys lacrosse bracket, Midland-Dow will turn its focus to its next opponent, Detroit Catholic Central, who they will face off with on Friday night in the state quarterfinals.
