Patterson back at his South Gwinnett stomping grounds

SNELLVILLE, Ga. (BVM) — It hasn’t even been a decade since Ryan Patterson was last a South Gwinnett Comet, once a standout for the baseball team. Now at 26 years old, he is back with the team, but in a different capacity. Just eight years since his graduation, Patterson is now the head coach of the Comets.

This makes him the fifth head coach in team history dating back to 1964 when longtime head coach John Sawyer began his run.

Patterson comes from his previous post as the strength and conditioning coach as well as football assistant at Lamar County High School. The entirety of his professional upbringing was entrenched in the strength and conditioning world, as he had internships with Greater Atlanta Christian and Chip Smith Performance Systems, but the opportunity to be the head man at South changed his career track.

His familiarity with the program makes him a great hire, but his expertise as a ballplayer himself is what seals the deal. After his years with the Comets, Patterson went on to become an award-winning player with Armstrong State which has since merged with Division I Georgia Southern University.

He was named first team All-Peach Belt Conference, first team All-Southeast Region and both second and third team All-American during his time there. Patterson’s senior season was one to remember, as he batted .377 with seven home runs, 62 RBIs and 30 walks.

Now he will look to continue the strong tradition that is South Gwinnett baseball, which made it to the state tournament both in 2018 and 2019. COVID-19 has cast a temporary cold spell over the team, going 1-9 in the 2020 shortened season and 4-22 in 2021, so Patterson will look to get them back to their winning ways.
