Coon Rapids’ Sam Murillo set to compete at state tennis tournament

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (BVM) — The MSHSL Class AA individual boys state tennis tournament begins Thursday with one school returning after a long hiatus.

Sam Murillo, a sophomore at Coon Rapids, is the first Cardinal to make it to the tournament since 2002. Murillo earned his spot in the state tournament after making it to the section 7AA championship. In the championship, he lost to Keegan Nelson from Elk River High School, but his ticket to the state tournament was already punched.

Murillo had an impressive sophomore season at Coon Rapids and has gone 18-4 as the Cardinals’ No. 1 singles player.

He entered sectionals as the No. 1 and will enter the state tournament with a first round matchup against Eagan High School’s Allen Wong.
