Matoaca rising senior defensive end Keyshawn Burgos receives first Division I offer from nearby Richmond

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (BVM) — After a year of uncertainty and disappointment in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 has been nothing short of a spectacular year for Keyshawn Burgos. Burgos, who just finished his junior year at Matoaca High School, excelled in two sports for the Indians as a member of both the football and wrestling teams. Though the school year may be over, Burgos is continuing to achieve great things in 2021.

On June 4, Burgos announced on his personal Twitter account that he earned a football scholarship offer to nearby FCS program University of Richmond. It is the first Division I offer for the standout defensive end.

This is not the only good news the rising senior has received during the year. During his junior football season, which was played in the spring due to the ongoing pandemic, Burgos proved he was a force to be reckoned with. Though the team would finish with a disappointing 1-4 record in the shortened campaign, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound end continually made flashy plays, including a fumble return for a touchdown, on his way to second-team all-district and all-region honors.

Just prior to his star turn on the gridiron, Burgos was dominating on the wrestling mats as well. On Feb. 20, just two weeks before his football season would kick off, Burgos capped off an excellent wrestling year with a Class 5 state championship in the 220-pound weight class following his regional championship earlier in the month.

Throughout the offseason, the rising senior has continued to put the work in to make it to the collegiate level, going to numerous camps and proving his athletic prowess. With his first Division I offer in hand, it may not be long before Burgos joins Class of 2021 teammates Devin Bailey, Jacob Coleman and Troy Lewis, who will be attending Virginia Tech and East Carolina University, respectively, at the Division I level. As his senior year quickly approaches, expect the defensive end’s star to continue to rise and the Division I offers to start rolling in.
