River City’s Medina expected to have ‘big impact’ for Utah State softball

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (BVM) – It didn’t take long for Utah State head softball coach Steve Johnson to realize that he wanted Claudia Medina on his roster.

The River City High School two-sport standout averaged 12.3 points as a junior on the basketball court, but her superior talent shines through on the softball diamond. Medina’s combination of power, athleticism and speed has Johnson elated that the West Sacramento native will spend her collegiate career in Logan.

“Former assistant coach Jo Koons found Claudia and as soon as I saw her play, I knew that she was someone we wanted on the field,” Johnson said in a press release. “As a true utility player, she can play anywhere on the infield but also has the speed and skill set to play in the outfield if needed. While she has some pop in her bat, she’s another gap-to-gap kid with speed who can create chaos on the base paths for us.”

A career .533 hitter, Medina has amassed 16 home runs and 72 RBIs on 113 hits during her four years at River City. She particularly shined as a sophomore, batting .567 with seven home runs, 36 RBIs and seven stolen bases.

Medina’s senior campaign got off to a blazing start as she blasted two home runs in the season opener against Christian Brothers back in April.

The future Aggie wrapped up her final high school season batting .660 with five home runs and 16 RBIs on 35 hits in 15 games. She also added six doubles, five triples and six stolen bases.

Medina is one of six future Aggies being brought in for the 2021 class. Emily Dority (South Jordan, Utah), Taryn Edds (Anaheim, Calif.), Gigi Gonzalez (San Diego, Calif.), Ariel Lopez (San Marcos, Calif.) and Claire Raley (Clovis, Calif.) will join Medina in the pursuit of building on Utah State’s 14-30 2021 season.

If Johnson’s expectations are any indication of the future, Medina might end up making the largest impact of this group in Logan.

“Claudia is dedicated to the game and has put a lot of work in to become a great player who will have a big impact for us right away,” Johnson said in a press release.
