Derrick Cardinal named Minnesota’s Mr. Wrestling

FOREST LAKE, Minn. (BVM) — In late May the wrestling coaches association for Minnesota announced the winner of the Mr. Wrestling award. The winner was Forest Lake High School senior Derrick Cardinal.

The South Dakota State commit had an impressive senior season for the Rangers, going 41-1 and beating Lakeville North’s Zach Hanson to win the 132-pound Class AAA state title. Cardinal won in a 3-2 victory and an historic marker with the win. Cardinal is now only the 29th wrestler in Minnesota to win four straight state titles during his high school career. Even more impressive, he dropped from 138 pounds to 132 pounds so that he could wrestle against the best in the state.

Over his career, Cardinal has gone 240-30, making him the winningest wrestler in Forest Lake program history and Class AAAA section 7 history as well.

Cardinal committed to South Dakota State University back in 2019 and will begin his collegiate career there in the fall.
