Sydney Staier heading to Indiana women’s soccer as grad transfer

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (BVM) — Women’s soccer grad transfer Sydney Staier will stay within the Big Ten as she has announced she will transfer from Maryland to the Indiana Hoosiers for her final year of eligibility. Staier brings over plenty of experience, and head coach Erwin van Bennekom is excited to add her to the squad.

“We are very excited to welcome Sydney to Indiana and our program,” van Bennekom said. “She will come in with four years of experience playing in the Big Ten conference, a mindset that aligns with what our program is about and with tactical-technical qualities that will add to the strength and depth of our team.”

At Maryland, Staier started 46 of her 61 games played, continuing to improve each season. As a junior, she had two assists, earning her first career points. Last year, Staier scored her first career goal against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

However, Staier brings plenty of additional success to the Hoosiers’ program from her high school days. Growing up in Springfield, Va., Staier played for West Springfield High School where she won a state cup in 2016.

As a freshman and sophomore at West Springfield, Staier was named a second team all-conference player. During her state championship season in 2016, she was also named her conference’s best midfielder, and a first team all-state performer at the 6A level. Staier was also named first team all-conference in both her junior and senior seasons.

Indiana is coming off a 6-5-1 campaign in what was a unique season for all college soccer teams. The Hoosiers will look to rebound in a more normal year next season, with plenty of new faces like Staier ready to compete.
