Danbury HS girls track and field wins CIAC State Open Championships

DANBURY, Conn. (BVM) — The Danbury High School girls track and field team is the 2021 CIAC State Open champion. Danbury accumulated 44 points on June 10 in Willow Brook Park after a full team effort from the girls, but there was one standout athlete who propelled the team to victory.

Junior Alanna Smith won gold in the 100-meter (12.03) and the 400-meter (56.78). She also became the state champion in the 200-meter (24.49), which broke the Danbury school record.

By winning all three races, Smith scored 30 points of the 44 total that were earned by Danbury. Danbury took their second-straight State Open title after Smith’s gold medal victories. There is a high chance for Danbury to make a three-peat win considering that Smith will return as a senior for the 2022 season.

There were several other athletes who contributed to the remaining 14 points. Tianna Rogers won second in the shot put (37-feet-8.25-inches) and Giuliana Robles took fifth in the triple jump (35-feet-9.75-inches). Florence Dickson won eighth in the 100m (12.74) and the 4x100m relay team also took eighth place (50.05).
