North Stanly’s football season ends abruptly

NEW LONDON, N.C. — COVID-19, much like everything else, has deeply impacted all levels of sports. North Stanly High School’s 2020-21 football season came to an abrupt end in April when the team was quarantined following a COVID-19 exposure. It put everyone’s life in jeopardy and also ended the season before the true end of the season, a tough blow for one of the better teams in the state this spring.

The Stanly County Health Department ordered the quarantine as it tried to determine the cause of exposure. The team was the No. 1 seed in the Class 1AA football playoffs after going a perfect 6-0 during the shortened season. Unsurprisingly, the players expressed extreme dissatisfaction over the outcome.

Though the season didn’t end the way the Comets had hoped, they were still historic. With their final 43-21 victory over Forest Hills, the Comets finished with the first undefeated regular season campaign in program history. While the team wasn’t able to test itself against some of the top teams in the Class 1AA postseason, the fact that it will likely be remembered as one of the best teams in the school’s history is certainly something Comets’ players can look back fondly on.

Hopefully, with COVID-19 slowly being handled with more efficiency, the Comets will be able to return to similar success this fall. With luck, perhaps players will be able to prove that the most recent unbeaten season was no fluke.
