Clemson recruit Layne St. George wins Washington’s Gatorade award

SEATTLE (BVM) — Due to her club soccer commitments, Layne St. George played only one season of high school soccer, and it was a brief one, but the 2021 Holy Names Academy graduate made the most of it.

On Tuesday, the 5-foot-6 defender was named the Gatorade Washington Girls Soccer Player of the Year after she led the Cougars to a 7-0 record in what was a shortened spring season. St. George anchored a Holy Names defense that posted five shutouts and allowed just three goals in seven matches.

“Layne St. George is a truly special player,” Holy Names Academy head coach Julianna Sackeyfio said in a Gatorade press release. “She makes big plays when needed, and her consistency at helping us keep the ball and build into the attacking third has been nearly unstoppable.”

Since entering high school, St. George has played club soccer for Seattle’s Reign Academy, a U.S. Soccer Development Academy. She’s also a member of the U.S. Soccer under-17 women’s national team player pool and is ranked by TopDrawSoccer.com as the No. 65 recruit in the Class of 2021. Last November, St. George signed a national letter of intent to play college soccer at Clemson University beginning this fall.
