Embry-Riddle adds Marshalltown CC transfer Zaragoza

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (BVM) —  Last season, the Embry-Riddle women’s basketball team was just 9-18, losing in the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament by 30 points. However, that could be chalked up to the team’s youthfulness. Of its entire roster, the team had just two seniors, so its core will remain intact.

However, that young core will now once again have some upperclassmen leadership. Adding Spain-import Eva Zaragoza from Marshalltown Community College in Iowa will pay dividends both on the minds of the young players and on the court.

The 6-foot post player from Madrid started 42 of her 47 games with the Tigers across two seasons. In 2019-20, she averaged 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds, showing displays of true grit under the hoop, but the jump she took from her freshman year to sophomore year was significant.

Receiving first team All-Region honors from the Iowa Community College Athletic Association Conference, Zaragoza led the Tigers in scoring with 12.5 points per night and was second with rebounds, averaging 6.7.

Zaragoza’s sister, Sara, was a four-year Division I player with the Portland Pilots and now plays professionally back in Spain. If Eva continues to ascend at the clip she has been, perhaps a future in basketball awaits her as well.
